You get what you get and you don't get upset.

This is was what the teacher said to her second grade students today during my school visit (when she was passing out notebooks and one boy wanted a green one). I'd heard it before, but somehow it really struck me this time. A pretty good mantra for most things in life, now that I think about it.

Hi Grace, I finally signed up!

I must disagree with your teacher.

Getting an ugly notebook may not be grounds for getting upset, but trying to never get upset is as futile and counterproductive as trying to completely suppress any other emotion. Sooner or later we have to come to terms with how we feel, regardless of how hard we try to hide our feelings from ourselves.

BTW, do you guys want to go see "children of men" this weekend? Maybe I should just ask robert since I know you have those "occupational hazards" :)

Hi Austin!

Hmm, I guess I was thinking more along the lines of there are things that you can't change, so learning to accept it without getting upset might be a good thing.

Robert would be psyched to see Children of Men with you, just give a call.

We are a family of fans of your books from Indiana. I was so excited to find you have a blog! But then so saddened to read that Robert may be dealing with cancer again. I wanted you to know our thoughts and prayers are with Robert and you.
Here is a photo of our kiddos enjoying "Robert's Snow" when we had some snow fall last year!
